GreenHill Center for North Carolina Art
Opening night September 20th, 6-7:30pm
Show on display from September 10th-25th, 2019
GreenHill is pleased to present the works of Jeffrey Cates relating to a major commission to paint a portrait of an historic Chicago institution, the Pacific Garden Mission. This portrait contains a collage of short stories from the life of the community. The list of vanities include life’s in-between moments: love, hate, sleep, work, joy and fear. Using the language of art history and literary references, the collection of stories come together in a single genre: apocalypse painting. The narrative it invites the observer not to stand back but to step into the story as it testifies to the life in and around the institution and raises questions about man’s mortality and empathy towards his fellow man. The monumental work, seen in our area for the first time before leaving for Vancouver, Washington, and an accompanying series of prints that focus on vignettes from the painting. Additionally, there will be prints featuring the community care work provided by two local institutions: the Winston Salem Rescue Mission and the Greensboro Urban Ministry. A portion of the sales from the work will go to the respective institutions.
